The main issue of Courage d’être , to save the human being from despair, explains the considerable scope of this work, one of the ten most significant books of the 20th century as far as the contemporary reformulation of Christianity is concerned. The experience of healing and liberation that constitutes the guideline cannot be confined to any exhaustive description.
The courage of faith or courage as paradoxical self-acceptance is nothing but a modern expression of the Lutheran principle of justification. To be accepted means to stop being superfluous, to stop “being superfluous” (Sartre), to be wanted by what is the source and the ultimate foundation of the courage to be: God above God.
